The spotlight now moves to the ODI format as India and England gear up for a three-match series, beginning with the opening fixture at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday. With the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup gradually coming into focus, both teams will use the series to assess combinations, build momentum, and prepare for the challenges ahead. For India, it also marks an important phase under captain Shubman Gill, who believes the 50-over format continues to hold immense significance despite ongoing discussions about its place in the modern cricket calendar.

Shubman Gill picks the two backbones of Indian cricket

Speaking to reporters ahead of the first ODI, Gill made it clear that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma continue to be central figures in India’s plans. Asked about the team’s transition and the balance between youth and experience, the Indian captain praised the veteran duo for their lasting impact on the side.

“Virat bhai (Kohli) and Rohit bhai (Sharma) have been the backbone of the Indian batting line-up for the past decade. They remain a very integral part of our team. The experience and skill they bring are obviously very valuable,” Gill said.

The skipper highlighted how Kohli and Rohit have consistently delivered in different conditions across the world for more than a decade. Gill also revealed that the management has already begun planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, adding that he has been discussing future strategies and squad combinations with Kohli during training sessions.

India eye fresh start after disappointing T20I campaign

India head into the ODI series determined to leave behind a difficult T20I leg against England, where they were comprehensively beaten 4-0. The visitors struggled throughout the series, with their batting lineup failing to fire consistently, including a collapse that saw them bowled out for just 76 in one match.

Despite those setbacks, Gill insisted that the mood within the dressing room remains upbeat. According to the captain, the team has moved on from the T20I results and is fully focused on the challenges of the 50-over format.

India will also be strengthened by the return of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, whose presence is expected to boost the bowling attack significantly. Combined with the experience of Kohli and Rohit, the visitors will be eager to begin the ODI series on a positive note and lay the foundation for their preparations ahead of the next World Cup.
