Start doing those vocal warm-ups because the second trailer for John Carney’s newest film, Power Ballad, has been released!
Starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, this film looks to be full of heart, comedy, and catchy music in typical John Carney fashion. Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, and Jack Reynor also star.
The Irish filmmaker first won audiences over in 2007 with Once, which starred real-life musicians Glenn Howerton and Markéta Irglová, and whose emotional ballad, Falling Slowly, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Music has continued to be the heartbeat of Carney’s work with films like Begin Again and Sing Street, and now Power Ballad is turning it up a notch.
Rudd brings his comedic flair back to the big screen as Rick, a wedding singer whose music career is over the hill. Meanwhile, Nick Jonas, who began his career with his band The Jonas Brothers, returns to his boy band roots by portraying a boy band star, Danny. The two strike up a friendship during a jam session one night, where Rick shares one of his old love songs with Danny. The duo hit a sour note when Danny records the song as his own in hopes of rekindling his own music career, leaving Rick out of the spotlight. To add insult to injury, Rick discovers the betrayal when he hears his song over the speakers of a retail shop, which you can watch below!
Synopsis:
When Rick (Paul Rudd), a past-his-prime wedding singer, meets fading boy-band star Danny (Nick Jonas) during a gig, the two bond over music and a late-night jam session. But when Danny turns one of Rick’s songs into the hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves – even if it means risking everything he cares about. From writer-director John Carney (Sing Street, Once), Power Ballad is a feel-good story about music, self-respect, friendship, and the price of ambition.
Power Ballad hits UK cinemas on May 29th.
