Former National Hockey League left winger Kyle Calder of Mannville, Alberta passed away on Monday according to the Associated Press. What we know at this time is that Calder died of a brief illness, and the passing was announced by his daughter Madison on Instagram.
Calder played for five organizations over 11 seasons in the NHL from 1999 to 2009. He was with the Chicago Blackhawks for six seasons from 1999 to 2006, with the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings from 2006 to 2007, with the Los Angeles Kings from 2007 to 2009, and the Anaheim Ducks in 2009.
In 590 NHL regular season games, Calder had 114 goals, and 180 assists for 294 points. He was a -71 with 309 penalty minutes, 73 power-play points, four shorthanded points, 16 game-winning goals, and 1005 shots on goal.
During the postseason, Calder had two goals and one assist for three points. He was a +1 with 10 penalty minutes, one power-play goal, and 23 shots on goal. Calder’s lone postseason assist came on April 22, 2007 in a 2-1 Red Wings win over the Calgary Flames. Calder set up Johan Franzen for the game-winning goal at 4:23 of double overtime in game six of the Western Conference quarterfinals, a series the Red Wings won four games to two.
Calder also won a gold medal for Canada at the 2003 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Hockey Championships in Helsinki, Finland. In nine games, Calder had one goal and one assist for two points.
