Good Morning America is one of the most-watched morning news programs. Viewers tune in expecting to see the three main anchors – Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan. The ABC news program has a core team of television personalities to bolster the show, including Ginger Zee as chief meteorologist and Lara Spencer. When one of the three main hosts was unexpectedly absent for several days, viewers became concerned. Keep reading to find out the reason for the absence.
Good Morning America Host Replaced Unexpectedly
The upheaval at CBS News has put other networks and viewers on edge. Several high-profile journalists have resigned, been laid off, or outright fired after Bari Weiss took over as editor-in-chief of the CBS News division. Good Morning America went through changes of its own a few years ago before finding the solid team of Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan.
Viewers were surprised on Friday, May 29, and again on Monday, June 1, to find Robin Roberts absent and Rebecca Jarvis in her place. Robin Roberts revealed on social media that she wasn’t on the morning program because she was in South Africa with her wife, Amber Laign. However, it wasn’t a romantic getaway.
Robin Roberts’ Unexpected Absence Explained
Like many television hosts, Robin Roberts has other pursuits. She started a production company several years ago to bring forgotten or misunderstood stories to light. The GMA host has teamed up with Lifetime several times in the past as a producer under the Robin Roberts Presents banner. Previous movies included I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story, Stolen By My Mother: The Kamiyah Mobley Story, and Mahalia.

Now Robin Roberts is working on a film to honor the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. She was in South Africa filming Angel in the Rubble, the true story of the last person found alive after the Twin Towers collapsed on that horrible day.
Genelle Guzman-McMillan was on the 64th floor of the North Tower. She was working as an administrative assistant to the Port Authority at the time of the attacks. She spent 27 hours buried alive after the towers collapsed. The movie is based on her 2011 memoir of the same name. Sherri Shepherd and Dondré T. Whitfield were with Robin Roberts in South Africa to film the movie. The former talk show host portrays Genelle Guzman-McMillan in the upcoming film.
Angel in the Rubble is expected to air on Lifetime in September as part of the network’s coverage of the anniversary. Robin Roberts returned to Good Morning America, but her producing career could take her away again in the future. Stay tuned for more details on her future projects.
