Marseille made a superb start to the new Ligue 1 season as they hammered 10-man Strasbourg 4-0 at the Stade Velodrome.
After dominating for most of the first half, new Marseille boss Bruno Genesio saw his side take the lead a minute into the second as Amine Gouiri swept home to break the deadlock.
Strasbourg’s task got even harder when Samir El Mourabet was sent off for kicking out at Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and they then gifted Marseille a second as Gouiri converted from the penalty spot after Guela Doue brought down Igor Paixao.
Keyliane Abdallah made it 3-0 a minute from the end of normal time as he drove home his first senior goal. Hojbjerg, stripped of the captaincy after reportedly rejecting a move to Newcastle United, rounded off the rout with a volley deep into stoppage time to cap a miserable start for new Strasbourg boss Hugo Oliveira.
In LaLiga, Real Betis started their campaign with a victory as Rodrigo Riquelme’s far-post volley proved enough to secure a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad.
