Brazil have seen a penalty saved in their World Cup last-16 clash with Norway, with the European side also seeing a goal ruled out in a frantic first half.

In what was widely expected to be an entertaining and close contest between the two, it was almost a dream start for Norway.

Patrick Berg rounded off a smooth move after Martin Odegaard had released Alexander Sorloth down the right-hand side, who would fire the ball across the box for the Bodo/Glimt man to rifle into the top corner.

But the offside flag went up, and the decision was confirmed by VAR, halting some wild celebrations from the Norwegian crowd.

Seven minutes later, Brazil had a penalty.

Chasing a loose ball, Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha managed to poke the ball away from the leg of Kristoffer Ajer, being brought down in the process.

Initially, the referee did not award the penalty, but a VAR intervention meant Bruno Guimaraes stepped up to the spot, before seeing his stuttering effort saved by Orjan Nyland.

Since then, it has been an end-to-end affair, with either side looking capable of grabbing the opening goal.
