In a massive setback for the Indian cricket team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Sunday that bowling duo Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy have been ruled out of India’s upcoming white-ball assignments. Rana will miss the highly anticipated three-match One Day International (ODI) series against England, while Chakravarthy has been sidelined for the subsequent Twenty20 International (T20I) series against Zimbabwe.

The medical updates come at a chaotic time for Indian cricket. The national side, operating under the heavy scrutiny of head coach Gautam Gambhir, is desperate to turn things around after a brutal stretch of form. India recently suffered a 2-0 T20I series defeat against Ireland, followed by a crushing 4-0 sweep at the hands of England. The final loss at Trent Bridge not only sealed a miserable series but also stripped India of its coveted No. 1 ICC T20I team ranking. With the management looking to steady the ship, these fresh injury blows present a major hurdle.

Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy miss out on England ODIs and Zimbabwe T20Is

According to the official media release issued by the BCCI on Sunday afternoon, both players fell victim to soft-tissue injuries during the third T20I against England at Trent Bridge. Fast bowler Rana complained of acute discomfort in his right hamstring. Ensuing medical scans confirmed a Grade 1 hamstring tear, immediately ruling him out of the England ODIs. Rana will now fly back to Bengaluru to report to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) for targeted rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, mystery spinner Chakravarthy suffered a more severe setback, reporting intense pain in his left hamstring during the same match. A subsequent MRI scan revealed a Grade 2 hamstring injury. Following specialist consultations, medical experts advised a prolonged period of rest, ruling him out of the Zimbabwe T20I tour. He will join Rana at the CoE.

Alarm bells are ringing within the Indian cricket community regarding player workload and fitness protocols. Both Rana and Chakravarthy had only recently been cleared to play in the England series after completing extensive rehab at the CoE for previous injuries. Their immediate re-injury raises uncomfortable questions about the BCCI’s medical clearance processes and the rushed re-entry of players into high-intensity international cricket.

India names replacements as ODI squad begins training in Birmingham

To fill the void, the selection committee has named ready replacements. Prince Yadav has been drafted into the ODI squad to replace Rana, while leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi joins the T20I squad traveling to Zimbabwe in place of Chakravarthy.

Amidst the roster shuffling, India’s core ODI specialists have already transitioned into red-alert preparation mode. Senior stalwarts including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and premier spinner Kuldeep Yadav began high-intensity training sessions in Birmingham on Saturday. The crucial three-match ODI series against England is scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, July 14, at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

With Shreyas Iyer taking up leadership duties in various capacities, serving as vice-captain for the England ODIs and captaining the young squad bound for Zimbabwe, the pressure is squarely on the transition system to deliver.

India’s updated squad for England ODIs: Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vc), KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar, Prince Yadav.

India’s updated squad for Zimbabwe T20Is: Shreyas Iyer (c), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma (vc), Ishan Kishan (wk), Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Rinku Singh, Harsh Dubey, Prince Yadav, Yash Thakur, Ashok Sharma, Mayank Yadav, Prabhsimran Singh (WK), Ravi Bishnoi.
