Hayden Panettiere fiercely pushed back against the painful perception that she willingly walked away from her daughter, Kaya, years before her death at 36. In her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” the “Nashville” actress detailed her decision to allow Kaya to live primarily with her former fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, while she struggled with addiction, depression, and the loss of her identity.
Panettiere acknowledged that living apart from her only child had caused tremendous pain, describing the separation as the most difficult experience of her life. “Not being under the same roof with her every day has been the most gut-wrenching experience of my life,” she wrote.
She also addressed the custody arrangement during a recent appearance on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast. The actress said she was devastated by the suggestion that she had casually given her daughter away and then moved forward without being affected by the decision. “I mean, the idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be OK with it is heartbreaking. Couldn’t be farther from the truth,” the star recently said on the podcast.
Kaya, now 11, was born in December 2014. Panettiere shared her with Klitschko, a former heavyweight boxing champion from Ukraine. Although Kaya primarily lived with her father, Panettiere maintained that the arrangement did not reflect a lack of love or concern for her daughter. She reportedly praised Klitschko as an “amazing father” and said her relationship with Kaya remained strong despite the distance separating them.
Addiction And Depression Affected Her Ability To Parent
Panettiere explained that she had reached a point where she no longer felt like herself. Her struggles with addiction, grief, and depression deeply affected her ability to parent Kaya in the way she wanted.
Rather than minimize those difficulties, the actress acknowledged that she needed help and had sought professional treatment herself. “I think a misconception is that I have been, in the past, forced into treatment when, in fact, I have been the one who has sought it out. Who was saying I desperately need help?” said Panettiere.
According to Panettiere, she recognized that she was struggling and repeatedly attempted to find the support she needed. Allowing Kaya to live primarily with Klitschko was therefore not presented as a choice made out of indifference. Panettiere described it as a devastating decision made while she was confronting circumstances that had overwhelmed her ability to care for herself.
The Actress Opened Up About Postpartum Depression
Panettiere had previously spoken publicly about experiencing postpartum depression following Kaya’s birth. Her memoir expanded upon that period while examining how motherhood, addiction, and the pressures of growing up in Hollywood intersected in her life.
“This Is Me: A Reckoning” was released on May 19, 2026, through Grand Central Publishing. The 320-page book traced Panettiere’s journey from child stardom to adulthood and included her experiences with substance abuse, postpartum depression, and treatment.
The actress promoted the memoir during what became her final public appearance. On May 26, she joined a panel discussion in West Hollywood, California, where she spoke about motherhood, mental health, and the difficulties she faced after entering the entertainment industry at a young age.
Hayden Panettiere Praised Wladimir Klitschko As A Father
Despite the pain of living apart from Kaya, Panettiere did not disparage Klitschko for taking on the primary parenting role. She instead praised him as an “amazing father” and emphasized that her daughter was being cared for.
That distinction was important to Panettiere’s account. She acknowledged that her personal struggles affected the custody arrangement without suggesting that Kaya had been abandoned or left without a devoted parent. The actress also said the distance between them had not destroyed their mother-daughter bond.
Her Final Confessions Resurface Following Her Death
Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, after being found unresponsive at her residence in Greenville, South Carolina. Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her passing through a statement shared by her representative.
“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her, and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” Skip said. “We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”
Authorities said their preliminary investigation had found no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances. Emergency dispatch audio reportedly contained references to an “overdose” and “cardiac arrest,” but Panettiere’s official cause and manner of death have not been determined.
The Greenville Police Department and Greenville County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate her death.
