It has been confirmed that the internet fan favourite teen drama HBO series, Euphoria, has concluded after three seasons, just hours after the season finale.
Debuting in 2019 by creator Sam Levinson, who is the son of Art film legend Barry Levinson, the show initially focused on a gang of high schoolers as they face the highs and lows of mid-to-late teenhood. It starred an ensemble cast led by Zendaya in an Emmy-award-winning role, alongside Hunter Schafer, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Maude Apatow, and Angus Cloud.
The third season took the show premise out of high school by coming five years after the events of season 2. Viewers saw leading girl Rue struggle to stay afloat as a drug mule, strip joint worker and government mole, as well as the show’s most divisive character, Cassie (Sweeney), engage in online sex work as led by former best friend Maddie (Demie) while in a challenging marriage to jock-turned-estate agent Nate (Elordi).
Season three saw cast member Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje join as Rue’s unnerving new boss.
Despite immense success for the first two seasons, such as 80% and 78% on Rotten Tomatoes respectively, 33 award wins from 108 nominations and endless waves on online discourse and attention, Euphoria’s third season oversaw many challenges, such as a four year halt after the second season, frustrating fans, as well as controversy with rumours of cast conflict on set and the stars finding controversy in other ventures.
Nonetheless, the season eventually made it to HBO and has now ended after eight episodes.
“It was important that everyone felt season three was moving the story forward in a meaningful and ambitious way,” Francesca Orsi, executive vp HBO programming, recently shared. “When Sam began sharing how much more expansive the world of the show would feel this season, there was genuine excitement about returning.”
“If you’re not watching episodes seven and eight live — the moment they drop — they will get spoiled,” creator Levinson stressed. “There’s some big things that happen.”
The creator also praised the last season as “hands down [the] best season” and teased “there’s some big things that happen”.
