The IPL 2026 campaign for Punjab Kings (PBKS) has taken a dramatic turn over the last few weeks. After enjoying a sensational unbeaten start to the season with seven matches without defeat, PBKS have suddenly lost momentum at the worst possible time. Four consecutive losses have now placed their playoff qualification hopes under serious pressure as the league stage enters its decisive phase.

The latest setback came against Delhi Capitals (DC) at HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, where PBKS failed to defend a massive total despite appearing firmly in control for much of the contest. While the defeat has complicated their road to the playoffs, the good news for the Punjab Kings is that qualification still remains in their own hands heading into the final stretch of the tournament.

PBKS stumble again despite posting huge total against DC

Punjab Kings appeared set to finally end their losing streak after posting an imposing total of 210/5 against Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala. Skipper Shreyas Iyer once again led from the front with a composed unbeaten knock of 59 off 36 deliveries, anchoring the innings brilliantly on a batting-friendly surface.

The middle order also chipped in with useful contributions, helping PBKS cross the 200-run mark and seemingly place themselves in a commanding position. However, their bowling and fielding once again let them down badly under pressure. Despite Arshdeep Singh producing a disciplined spell of 2/21 in his four overs, Delhi Capitals managed to chase down the target with an over to spare. Missed opportunities in the field and inconsistent execution with the ball proved costly for Punjab, who now find themselves slipping down the table after once looking like strong contenders for a top-two finish.

IPL 2026 playoffs qualification scenario for PBKS

Punjab Kings remain alive in the playoff race, but the margin for error has narrowed significantly. With 13 points from 11 matches, PBKS currently sit inside the top four, though several teams remain closely packed behind them in the standings. Historically, 16 points have usually been enough to secure qualification for the IPL playoffs in a 10-team format. That means Punjab Kings need at least two wins from their remaining three matches to guarantee their place in the knockout stage without depending heavily on other results.

If PBKS manage to win all three remaining fixtures, they could still push for a top-two finish and secure a spot in Qualifier 1, which would provide them with two opportunities to reach the final. However, another defeat could make things extremely complicated. In that scenario, net run rate may become a major factor, especially with teams like Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals still mathematically alive in the playoff race.

    Remaining fixtures of PBKS

    • Against Mumbai Indians on May 14 at HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala
    • Against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 17 at HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala
    • Against Lucknow Super Giants on May 20 at Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow
