The ICC Women’s T20I Bowling Rankings underwent a massive shake-up on Tuesday, crowning a new queen of spin just as the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 hits its boiling point. Indian sensation Shree Charani has officially seized the global No. 1 spot, vaulting past the world’s elite to claim the premier position.

The 21-year-old’s rise comes at a pivotal juncture for Team India. While Charani celebrates a career-defining milestone, the team is under immense pressure following a recent setback against South Africa. India must now dust themselves off as they prepare for a high-stakes, must-win group encounter against an unpredictable Bangladesh side.

Shree Charani tops T20I bowling charts only a year after entering international cricket

Just over 12 months since making her international debut, left-arm orthodox spinner Charani has scaled the absolute peak of international cricket. Following the latest ICC rankings update, the youngster from Andhra Pradesh has vaulted past England’s Linsey Smith to become the No. 1 ranked T20I bowler in the world. It is a breathtakingly rapid ascent for a player who, only a year ago, was still waiting for her first international cap.

Charani’s rise is the continuation of an extraordinary breakthrough year. In 2025, she transitioned seamlessly into the 50-over format, becoming a cornerstone of India’s historic ICC Women’s ODI World Cup triumph on home soil. Operating with immaculate control, subtle flight, and clever pace variations, she finished that tournament with 14 wickets, delivering high-pressure, match-turning spells whenever needed.

She has carried that exact big-tournament temperament into the ongoing 2026 T20 World Cup in England. Charani has been the standout bowler of the competition, sitting comfortably as the leading wicket-taker with 10 scalps from just three appearances, matching Poonam Yadav‘s 2020 record for the most wickets by an Indian in a single T20 World Cup edition.

She began the tournament with a three-wicket haul against Pakistan. Her march to the top was rubber-stamped in Leeds, where she dismantled the Netherlands with a brilliant spell of 4 for 19. She backed that up with a fierce three-wicket burst in Manchester against South Africa. Though India ultimately fell short in that encounter, Charani’s individual brilliance proved impossible for the rankings calculators to ignore.

By seizing the crown, Charani has shattered the long-standing dominance of England’s elite spin quartet. While Smith slipped to third place after a quiet start to the campaign, her teammate Charlie Dean climbed into second. Close behind is former world No. 1 Sophie Ecclestone, who surged four places to claim the fourth spot, while India’s Deepti Sharma slid down to eighth. Over in the batting rankings, Australia’s Georgia Voll continues to lead the pack, with India’s Smriti Mandhana holding firm at fifth, Shafali Verma climbing to sixth, and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur sneaking into tenth.

India face Bangladesh in a must-win encounter

With individual accolades safely put aside, the immediate focus for Charani and her teammates completely shifts toward survival in Group A. India’s recent six-wicket defeat to South Africa at Old Trafford has thrown the group wide open, turning their upcoming clash against Bangladesh into an absolute must-win encounter if they want to guarantee a spot in the semi-finals.

The loss to South Africa exposed clear areas of vulnerability that the team must fix immediately. Despite a steadying partnership between Deepti and Harmanpreet, India struggled on a sluggish pitch, posting a below-par total of 158/7. In response, South Africa chased the target down with five balls to spare, heavily aided by a series of costly dropped catches in the field.

Bangladesh, known for their ability to thrive in spin-friendly conditions, will be watching closely. To counter them, India will need their batting unit to display far more intent during the middle overs and ensure their fielding is clinically sharp. With the stakes at an all-time high, India will look to their newly crowned world No. 1, Charani, to set the tone early with the ball and weave her magic once again to keep the nation’s T20 World Cup dreams alive.
