The stage is set at the iconic Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi for a high-stakes encounter as Delhi Capitals (DC) host Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 48 of IPL 2026. This Tuesday evening clash on May 05, 2026, carries immense weight for both franchises, who are currently locked in a mid-table scramble for the playoffs. With the tournament reaching its business end, DC captain Axar Patel won a crucial toss and elected to bat first, citing the potential for the surface to slow down as the game progresses. While the spotlight is on the tactical battle between Axar and CSK’s Ruturaj Gaikwad, the biggest talking point before the first ball was the absence of New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson from the Capitals’ lineup.

Why Kyle Jamieson is not playing against CSK in today’s match?

The decision to bench Jamieson for this pivotal match stems from a combination of tactical restructuring and the return of a key spearhead. During the toss, captain Axar confirmed that Lungi Ngidi has been brought into the playing XI in place of Jamieson. This change marks the return of the South African speedster, who was recently cleared to play after recovering from a frightening head injury sustained on April 25.

While Jamieson has been a consistent presence in the DC attack, his exclusion is primarily a horses for courses tactical move. The Arun Jaitley track has historically favoured pace and bounce early on but tends to grip for the slower, heavy-ball bowlers as the match wears on. Ngidi’s expertise in the death overs and his ability to use the slower surface at the Delhi venue made him the preferred overseas pacer for this specific matchup.

Furthermore, Jamieson’s recent form has been a mix of brilliance and disciplinary trouble. Only three days ago, the Kiwi pacer was handed a demerit point and an official warning for a Level 1 breach of the IPL Code of Conduct. The incident involved an aggressive send-off to Rajasthan Royals’ teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, which sparked significant debate. While the disciplinary action didn’t result in a suspension, the DC management appears to have opted for Ngidi’s experience and tactical fit to stabilize their bowling unit against a deep CSK batting order.

Playing XI and impact substitutes of both the teams

Both teams have finalized their combinations, balancing experience with explosive youth. DC have opted for a spin-heavy middle order, while CSK continues to back their versatile all-rounders.

Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI): Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Urvil Patel, Kartik Sharma, Dewald Brevis, Jamie Overton, Akeal Hosein, Noor Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj, Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapneet Singh

Impact Substitutes: Shivam Dube, Prashant Veer, Matthew Short, Akash Madhwal, Sarfaraz Khan

Delhi Capitals (Playing XI): KL Rahul (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Karun Nair, Tristan Stubbs, Nitish Rana, Axar Patel (c), Ashutosh Sharma, Mitchell Starc, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi Ngidi, T Natarajan
