The IPL 2026 season has reached a fever pitch as the 45th match of the tournament unfolds at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. This high-stakes encounter features a resurgent Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) taking on a formidable Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 03, 2026. With the playoff race tightening, every tactical decision at the toss carries immense weight. As the captains met in the middle of the Orange Army’s fortress, the primary talking point among fans and analysts wasn’t just the pitch conditions, but a significant shift in the KKR overseas combination.

Kolkata Knight Riders, led by the experienced Ajinkya Rahane, entered this contest looking to capitalize on a recent mid-season break. While SRH has been clinical at home, KKR’s strategy has pivoted toward refreshing their explosive top order to counter the pace-heavy Hyderabad attack. However, the absence of the dynamic Kiwi wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert from the starting eleven raised several eyebrows before Rahane clarified the team’s tactical reshuffle.

Why Tim Seifert is not playing against Sunrisers Hyderabad in today’s match?

The exclusion of Tim Seifert from the KKR Playing XI is a purely tactical maneuver rather than an injury-related setback. During the toss, Rahane emphasized the importance of utilizing recent breaks to re-couple and identify areas of improvement. KKR’s management opted to bring back Finn Allen in place of Seifert to provide a different dimension of aggression at the top of the order.

Allen’s ability to exploit the powerplay overs on a Hyderabad surface known for its true bounce was deemed a higher priority for this specific matchup. Rahane noted that in the T20 format, the game hinges on “winning small moments” and being “proactive.” By swapping Seifert for Allen, KKR are looking for a more vertical power-hitting approach. Additionally, the team made a local tactical change by handing Manish Pandey his first game of the season in place of Ramandeep Singh, banking on Pandey’s vast experience on this particular ground. Seifert remains available as an Impact Substitute, should the match situation require his clinical finishing or glove work in the second innings.

Both teams have balanced their squads with a mix of raw power and spin variety, keeping the humid Hyderabad conditions in mind.
