“The topic of forced sterilisation is universal, not only a phenomenon of socialist times”
by Ana Stanic
The Slovak director talks about his film, which revisits one of the darkest chapters of Czechoslovakia’s history, the state’s policy of forced sterilisation of Romani women
Slovak director Ivan Ostrochovský joined us at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival to discuss his Crystal Globe Competition entry, Only Beautiful Things to Look At. The film revisits one of the darkest chapters of Czechoslovakia’s recent history, the state’s policy of forced sterilisation of Romani women, while asking questions that reach far beyond a specific time and place. He speaks about the film’s irrational visual symbolism, recreating the look of the socialist era while keeping the story timeless, and many other topics.
