J Balvin walked into Tienda Vieja, a small Colombian restaurant in Queens, and turned a quiet neighborhood spot into one of the most talked-about places in New York.

The visit was put together by newyorkturk, a New York-based food and lifestyle creator with a knack for spotlighting local gems. The restaurant is a family-owned Colombian spot at 65-62 Fresh Meadows Ln in Fresh Meadows. It has been having a hard time covering rent. newyorkturk decided the best thing he could do was bring some backup – specifically, one of Colombia’s most famous sons.

On Instagram, newyorkturk described it simply: “Tienda Vieja, a family owned Colombian Restaurant that’s struggling to pay their rent. So I brought Colombian artist, J Balvin to try their food and to show support.”

The post crossed 208,000 likes, a genuinely notable number for a local food account. That kind of response suggests the story hit a nerve far outside newyorkturk’s usual corner of the internet.

J Balvin has been one of Latin music’s biggest names for over a decade. Born in Medellín, Colombia, he built a career that helped carry reggaeton from a regional sound to a worldwide one. Songs like “Mi Gente” and “Safari” racked up billions of streams. He’s collaborated with Beyoncé, Bad Bunny, and Cardi B. He’s sold out arenas across multiple continents.

That makes the Queens visit feel all the more meaningful. This wasn’t a polished PR moment or a brand activation at a trendy Manhattan hotspot. It was a Colombian superstar sitting down at a family restaurant that needed a little help.

For Tienda Vieja, the attention is genuinely valuable. Small, independent restaurants in New York City have faced real financial pressure in recent years. Rent hikes and rising costs have pushed many beloved neighborhood spots to the edge. Stories like Tienda Vieja’s have become sadly familiar. The difference here is a very high-profile visitor who actually showed up.

Tienda Vieja sits in Fresh Meadows, a Queens neighborhood with a strong Latin community. It’s more than a place to eat. For many in the neighborhood, it’s a little piece of home.

newyorkturk has built his following by finding places like this. His account regularly highlights local spots across New York – the kinds of places a neighborhood builds its identity around. Getting J Balvin through the door was a creative and genuinely kind way to shine a light on a spot that deserved it.

J Balvin has spoken openly about growing up in Medellín. He’s talked about what it means to carry Colombia on a global stage. Stopping by a struggling family restaurant in Queens fits naturally into that story.

The spike in attention could translate to more customers and real help with the rent. It’s not guaranteed. But right now, Tienda Vieja has a story and a spotlight it didn’t have at the start of this week. The family behind it knows at least one very famous Colombian has their back.
