Paramount Pictures has revealed a new teaser trailer for Ebenezer, a twisted comedic retelling of the class Charles Dickens‘ story A Christmas Carol. Starring Johnny Depp as the title character, the trailer dubs him the “master of misfits“, highlighting their plan to employ his power of the hyperbolic and strange.
Though this teaser trailer gives little away, it lines a path for a film that draws new angles from the well known story, with a darker tone and format, which feels fitting with Depp as Ebenezer. This adaptation is being directed by Ti West, who is best known for his work in horror , and has been described as a dark fantasy. It has been described as a “thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London, following one man’s supernatural journey to face his past, present and future and fight for a second chance”.
Depp is known for taking on eccentric and out of place characters, with roles in The Pirates of the Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands and Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.
The cast is already showing signs of strength, the three ghosts taken on by Andrea Riseborough, Ghost of Christmas Past, Tramell Tillman, Ghost of Christmas Present and Disy Ridley as Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Also involved is Ian McKellan as Jacob Marley, Harry Potter star Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, Sam Claflin as Fred, Charlie Murphy and Ellie Bamber as the Fezziwigs, Nicholas Day as a Minister, and Arthur Conti as a young Ebenezer.
Depp was promoting the movie at San Diego Comic Con, in full wardrobe and make-up, and it will mark his first major titular studio lead since 2018, hoping therefore to be a triumphant return to the spotlight.
The writer for Ebenezer is Nathaniel Halpern and it is being produced by Emma Watts.
This film promises a fresh perspective on A Christmas Carol, hitting cinemas on November 13th just in time for the festive season.
