La grazia by Paolo Sorrentino has won the Italian Golden Globe for Best Film at the 66th edition of the awards organised by the Foreign Press Association in Italy, which were handed out last night in the Sala della Protomoteca on Rome’s Capitoline Hill. The opening title at last year’s Venice Film Festival and recently triumphant at the Nastri d’Argento Awards (read our news), this latest movie by the Oscar-winning Neapolitan director also claimed Best Actor by way of its protagonist, Toni Servillo.
The prize for Best Director, meanwhile, went to Vincenzo Alfieri thanks to 40 secondi (in competition at the 20th Rome Film Fest and the winner of three Nastri d’Argento awards), which also took home Best Young Newcomer courtesy of Justin De Vivo, who scooped the trophy for his depiction of Willy Monteiro Duarte. Barbara Ronchi, for her part, was named Best Actress for Leonardo Di Costanzo’s Elisa, which competed in Venice last year.
Among other awards, Margherita Spampinato bagged the Italian Golden Globe for Best First Film by way of Sweetheart, while Francesco Lagi’s Il dio dell’amore was crowned Best Comedy, as well as winning Best Score, as penned by Stefano Bollani.
The Globe for Best Screenplay was bestowed upon Giuliano Scarpinato, Benedetta Mori, Chiara Tripaldi and Nicolangelo Gelormini via Gioia (selected in Venice’s 22nd Giornate degli Autori line-up), while Daria D’Antonio nabbed Best Photography for her work on Primavera.
In other categories, Portobello – The Fall of Enzo Tortora by Marco Bellocchio was voted Best TV Series and Elvira Notari: Beyond Silence by Valerio Ciriaci won Best Documentary. The Green Globe, meanwhile, dedicated to works focusing on environmental themes, was awarded to L’estate dell’orsa maggiore by Andrea D’Ambrosio.
Last but not least, the 66th Italian Golden Globes ceremony proved an opportunity to celebrate two leading lights of Italian film: actress Monica Guerritore, who scooped the Foreign Press Grand Prize (having also recently made her filmmaking debut with Anna), and Gabriele Salvatores, who won an Oscar in 1992 via Mediterraneo and who has now bagged himself a Lifetime Achievement Award.
