Maluma released “Tu Recuerdo” this week and kept his Instagram announcement to one line. The caption reads, “Dedícale esta canción a Tu Recuerdo” – in English: “Dedicate this song to your memory.”
The title translates to “Your Memory” or “Your Remembrance.” The release came with no credited features and no album announcement.
The promotional post drew more than 114,000 likes on Instagram. Maluma has more than 70 million followers on the platform.
The Colombian singer, born Juan Luis Londoño Arias in Medellín in 1994, has spent the better part of a decade as one of Latin pop’s most consistent hitmakers. His catalog moves between fast, danceable material and slower, more personal tracks. “ADMV,” from his 2019 album “11:11,” became one of his most-played ballads and a standout among his more emotional cuts. “Tu Recuerdo” appears aimed at that part of his catalog.
Maluma’s international profile rose sharply after “Chantaje” in 2016, a Shakira duet that spread well beyond the reggaeton market. He and Shakira worked together again in 2020 on a remix of “Hawái,” another “11:11” track. The remix dropped during a period of heavy press coverage around Shakira’s separation from soccer star Gerard Piqué. The breakup-themed lyrics found a real-world parallel. The song got renewed attention on playlists and streaming services. That kind of second run is rare for a year-old single.
“11:11” also featured The Weeknd and J Balvin as collaborators. Maluma had appeared on Madonna’s 2019 album “Madame X” the year before, on a track called “Medellín.” That song was named after his hometown and drew wide press coverage at the time.
“Felices los 4,” from 2017, remains one of his most-streamed singles globally. It became a Latin radio fixture and held chart positions for months. His 2020 album “Papi Juancho” maintained his release pace during the pandemic.
In 2022, Maluma added film to his résumé. He appeared in “Marry Me” opposite Jennifer Lopez, playing a pop star in the romantic comedy. The film opened simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock.
“Tu Recuerdo” has no confirmed album or project tied to it as of this writing. It’s unclear whether it’s a standalone single or the start of a new rollout. Maluma hasn’t said either way.
