A masterclass in both disciplined bowling and authoritative batting has put New Zealand firmly in the driver’s seat on Day 3 of the second Test against England at The Oval. Beginning the day with the match hanging in a delicate balance, the Black Caps systematically dismantled England’s lower order before building a massive lead. By stumps on June 19, 2026, New Zealand reached 252 for 3 in their second innings, holding a commanding 352-run lead and leaving the hosts facing a mountain to climb.

Matt Henry’s brilliance leaves England short of New Zealand’s first-innings total

Resuming their first innings on Day 3, England faced the arduous task of chasing down New Zealand’s competitive first-innings total of 391. While lower-order resistance from Matthew Fisher, who struck a gritty 50 off 77 balls, threatened to close the gap, it was Matt Henry who stole the show.

Henry delivered a sensational exhibition of swing and seam bowling, ripping through England’s middle and lower order. He claimed the crucial scalps of established stars like Joe Root (46) and Harry Brook (24), trapping both leg-before-wicket just as they looked to accelerate. Henry didn’t stop there, tearing through Jordan Cox and Jofra Archer before removing Josh Tongue to secure a magnificent five-wicket haul, finishing with stellar figures of 5 for 80 across 24 overs. Supported by Will O’Rourke’s two wickets, Henry’s tireless spell bundled England out for 291 at Lunch, handing the visitors a vital 100-run first-innings cushion.

Henry Nicholls’ magnificent century hand New Zealand a commanding lead

With a 100-run advantage in their pocket, New Zealand’s second innings got off to a disastrous start. Archer dismissed captain Tom Latham for a duck in the third over, and Tongue soon removed Devon Conway for 11, leaving the visitors precariously placed at 28 for 2. However, what followed was a batting masterclass that effectively slammed the door on any English hopes of a comeback.

Henry Nicholls anchored the innings with magnificent poise and intent, completely shifting the momentum back to the Black Caps. Nicholls found an excellent ally in Rachin Ravindra, and together the pair stitched a crucial 161-run partnership for the third wicket. Ravindra played beautifully for his 76, smashing 15 boundaries before being unluckily dismissed via an umpire’s call lbw off Jacob Bethell.

Undeterred by the loss of his partner, Nicholls continued his onslaught, playing late and exploiting the gaps in the field. He brought up a blazing, unbeaten century off just 136 deliveries. By the close of play, Nicholls was unbeaten on 119 runs off 164 balls, a spectacular knock studded with 16 boundaries. Alongside Daryl Mitchell, who added a brisk 32 not out, Nicholls guided New Zealand to 252 for 3 at stumps. Scoring at a rapid current run rate of 4.50, the Black Caps have pushed their total lead to an ominous 352 runs, setting themselves up perfectly to dictate terms over the final two days.

Another dominant day for New Zealand, who now have a firm grip on this Test match as they lead by 352 runs with 7 wickets in hand 🏏#ENGvNZ #Cricket pic.twitter.com/059W3zMMNQ
