Michael Vaughan criticizes ECB over delay in appointing a national selector

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has strongly criticised the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for taking too long to appoint a new national selector. With the position vacant for nearly four months, Vaughan believes the delay is unacceptable at such an important time for the national team.

The role became available after Luke Wright stepped down as selector following the T20 World Cup in March 2026. Since then, the ECB has been searching for a replacement, but the announcement is still pending — even as England prepare for a home Test series against New Zealand starting in June.

Michael Vaughan calls the timing ‘ridiculous’

Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Vaughan expressed his frustration clearly. He said the selector should have been in place by early April so they could travel, watch domestic cricket, gather information, and build a clear picture of the players before the international summer begins.

“It’s ridiculous how they’re announcing a selector so late. I wanted the selector there on 1 April, going out, having a look, gathering information. Luke Wright quit at the back end of Australia. We knew didn’t we? It’s a long time, four months, to find someone,” Vaughan said on the Stick to Cricket podcast.

Vaughan stressed that four months is far too long for such a key role to remain empty. He believes a selector needs time on the ground to assess form, fitness, and potential properly, especially with important Test matches on the horizon.

    Impact on England’s preparation

The delay comes at a sensitive period for England cricket. After a mixed 2025-26 overseas season, the team will be looking to start the home summer strongly against New Zealand. Without a permanent selector in place, there are concerns about how selection decisions are being made in the interim and whether the best information is reaching the captain and coaching staff.

Vaughan’s comments highlight a wider worry that the ECB is not moving quickly enough on important structural matters, which could affect the team’s performance and planning.

Many fans and experts share Vaughan’s view that key support roles like the national selector should be filled well in advance of major series.
