Michigan woman baffled to learn she donated over $150,000 to ActBlue and Democrats

According to Federal Election Commission records, 88-year-old Elizabeth Waffle has been giving nearly nonstop to the Democratic fundraising juggernaut ActBlue since 2020 for a total of more than $150,000 in donations.

But Ms. Waffle, who lives in a trailer down a dirt road in Milan, Michigan, said she doesn’t believe she made all of those donations. “One hundred and fifty thousand? Hell no, I don’t have that kind of money,” Ms. Waffle told Michigan Enjoyer reporter Charlie LeDuff, who video-recorded his interview.

The Washington Times reached out to Ms. Waffle to try to verify that she did not make all of the donations.

The donations in her name are documented by the FEC and are small amounts ranging from as low as 66 cents to $30.

Most of the money went to ActBlue, but she is also recorded as having made 15 donations to Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, 104 donations to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, New York Democrat, and 339 donations to the Democratic political action committee 314 Action Fund.

Ms. Waffle, a Democrat who said she donated to Mr. El-Sayed, told Mr. LeDuff she doesn’t own a computer and has spotty internet. She questioned whether the donations were “all mine.”

The frequency of the donations in Ms. Waffle’s name is staggering. For example, 21 donations were made on May 30 and another 18 donations were made on May 31.

Multiple donations in her name were made nearly every day.

More than 13,000 donations in Ms. Waffle’s name went to ActBlue, which is under scrutiny due to alleged illegal foreign donations.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is investigating ActBlue following a New York Times report earlier this year that ActBlue’s outside legal team warned the organization that it did not always follow the correct protocol for avoiding fraudulent campaign donations from foreigners, and that it may have misled Congress about the matter.

ActBlue claimed attorney-client privilege over the documents the House committee is now seeking.

They include former ActBlue’s interim general counsel Aaron Ting’s resignation letter and an internal memo in which the organization’s former legal counsel alleged that he was retaliated against “for blowing the whistle on internal misconduct at ActBlue.”

ActBlue CEO Regina Wallace-Jones testified before the House Administration Committee on June 10 but refused to answer questions by asserting her Fifth Amendment right to remain silent.

The Washington Times reached out to ActBlue.
