Liam Millar scored a late winner as Hull City spoiled Coventry City‘s first Premier League home game for 25 years by claiming a 1-0 victory in a battle of newly promoted teams.

Hull stunned Manchester United 2-0 last week to mark their return to the top flight in style, and the team most had pegged for relegation before the season made it two wins from two with a smash-and-grab at Coventry Building Society Arena.

Coventry, having suffered a 3-0 defeat at champions Arsenal in their opener, will have entered the game desperate to make the most of a big opportunity to get off the mark.

But, for all the possession, the Sky Blues struggled to create opportunities to do so.

Taiwo Awoniyi had Coventry’s best chance as he failed to make proper contact on a deflected Loum Tchaouna cross in the first half, with his effort clawed away by Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Yet the better chances came from Hull, with Nobel Mendy drawing a fine save from Carl Rushworth with a 30-yard half-volley and Millar wasting a clear opening when he dragged an effort wide after beating a pair of defenders.

But he atoned for that miss eight minutes from the end of normal time as Coventry were caught on the counter, Millar slotting home after being played in by Mohamed Belloumi to send Hull second in the embryonic Premier League table and deal a damaging early blow to Coventry’s survival hopes.
