Pakistan selector Misbah-ul-Haq has shed light on one of the biggest talking points surrounding the country’s latest Test squad announcement, explaining why premier fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah were left out for the upcoming tours of the West Indies and England. The decision sparked widespread debate among fans after Pakistan unveiled a revamped squad featuring three uncapped players and appointed Babar Azam as the new Test captain.

While the omission of two of Pakistan’s frontline pacers raised questions over their future in red-ball cricket, Misbah made it clear that the selectors’ decision was based on current circumstances rather than a lack of faith in their abilities. He also stressed that being left out of one squad should not be viewed as the end of any player’s Test career.

Addressing the media, Misbah explained that the selection committee prioritised cricketers who have been consistently playing first-class cricket, while also considering workload management ahead of Pakistan’s demanding overseas Test assignments. The former Pakistan captain added that both Shaheen and Naseem remain firmly in the selectors’ plans and can earn a recall through strong performances in red-ball cricket.

“Look, the announcement of any team does not end anyone’s career, nor does it stop their goals. Going forward, you see where and how a performing player is needed. The reason for not selecting Shaheen or Naseem is that they are not currently playing four-day cricket, and their workload has not been geared towards the longer format. That is why we have preferred players who have been playing first-class cricket. As for Naseem, it is quite clear that when the season comes, he will play and prove himself. If the team needs him, he can be selected,” Misbah said.

He further clarified that experienced left-arm spinner Noman Ali also remains in contention despite being omitted from the current squad.

Pakistan eye turnaround in crucial WTC campaign

Pakistan will begin their next assignment with a two-match Test series against the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago later this month before travelling to England for a three-match Test series in August and September.

The upcoming contests are crucial for Babar’s side, who currently sit at the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 standings after winning just one of their opening four Tests. With only four points and a points percentage of 8.33, Pakistan will be desperate to revive their campaign during the challenging overseas tours.

Despite the high-profile omissions, the selectors have indicated that the door remains open for Shaheen, Naseem and Noman, with future selections expected to depend on red-ball form, workload management and the team’s requirements.
