ANDALUCIAN Partido Popular (PP) leader Juanma Moreno has struck a last-minute deal with Vox to secure his return as president of the region.
Moreno and the far-right party have agreed a policy framework that includes Vox’s so-called ‘national priority’ plan, according to Spanish media reports.
The controversial agenda seeks to prioritise Spaniards over foreigners in access to benefits and public assistance, although it remains unclear how it would be rolled out across Andalucia.
The deal comes after Moreno fell just two votes short of an absolute majority in the regional parliament during Tuesday’s first round of voting.
With a second investiture vote scheduled for 7pm on Thursday, both sides had rushed to finalise an agreement in a bid to secure a majority before the deadline.
However, sources say the question of Vox’s role inside the regional government remains unresolved for now.
The far-right party is demanding the vice-presidency and two councillor posts, while Moreno is only willing to concede the vice-presidency.
In last month’s Andalucian election, the PP won 53 seats – just two short of an outright majority – leaving Vox’s support essential to avoid a deadlock.
PP national leader Alberto Nuñez Feijoo said earlier on Thursday that any agreement should reflect the balance of power between the two parties, adding that Vox’s role in government should be ‘proportional’ to the election result.
