Thailand Women began their Women’s Asia Cup 2026 campaign with a closely fought encounter against Hong Kong Women in Dubai. After being put in to bat, Thailand battled through a challenging innings to post a competitive total before putting together a composed bowling effort in the second half.

Hong Kong showed plenty of fight during the chase and remained in contention deep into the innings. However, Thailand maintained their composure when the pressure intensified, eventually securing a six-run victory and extending their unbeaten record against Hong Kong to eight matches.

Naruemol Chaiwai anchors Thailand’s innings after a strong start

Thailand found themselves in a difficult position after being sent in to bat, but captain Naruemol Chaiwai provided the stability her side needed. The skipper top-scored with a well-paced 43 off 31 deliveries, keeping the innings together while wickets fell around her.

Marina Lamplough was the standout performer with the ball for Hong Kong, producing an excellent spell of 4 for 11. Her efforts kept Thailand from building significant momentum, particularly during the latter stages of the innings. Thailand suffered a dramatic collapse towards the end, losing seven wickets for just 20 runs. Despite the late setbacks, they managed to reach 120/9 from their 20 overs, leaving Hong Kong with a target of 121.

Thailand keep their composure to defend a modest total

Hong Kong’s chase got off to a shaky beginning as Mariko Hill departed without troubling the scorers. Kary Chan then provided the early impetus with a brisk 28 off 20 balls, helping Hong Kong recover and keep the required rate within reach. Yasmin Daswani added another 28, although her patient approach made it difficult for Hong Kong to maintain the scoring rate. Lamplough subsequently changed the momentum of the chase with an explosive 22 from just 11 deliveries.

Her dismissal with Hong Kong on 84/4 proved crucial, leaving the side needing 37 runs from the final 27 balls. Thailand’s bowlers responded well under pressure, restricting the scoring in the closing overs as Hong Kong entered the final over needing only 15 runs. Thipatcha Putthawong bowled the final over and conceded just eight runs while also taking a wicket. Hong Kong finished on 114/7 after 20 overs, falling six runs short of the target as Thailand secured a narrow opening-match victory.
