New Zealand Cricket have moved quickly to fill the void left by Kane Williamson after the batting great announced his retirement from international cricket. The decision came shortly after the BlackCaps suffered a 115-run defeat against England in the opening Test at Lord’s, leaving them trailing 1-0 in the three-match series.

Williamson’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable 16-year international career during which he established himself as New Zealand’s greatest batter and one of the most respected cricketers of his generation. With two crucial Tests still remaining in the series, the selectors have been forced to make an important squad adjustment as the visitors attempt to bounce back against England.

New Zealand name replacement for Kane Williamson

New Zealand have called up Will Young for the remaining two Tests against England following Williamson’s retirement. The experienced top-order batter is set to arrive in England on June 14 and will begin training with the squad ahead of the second Test at The Oval, which starts on June 17.

Young has represented New Zealand in 23 Test matches since making his debut in 2020, scoring 1,215 runs at an average of 31.97. Although he was initially overlooked for the England tour, the selectors have now turned to the 33-year-old to strengthen the batting unit for the remainder of the series.

One of Young’s most memorable achievements came during New Zealand’s historic 3-0 Test series victory in India in 2024. Batting at No. 3 in Williamson’s absence, he scored 244 runs in six innings and was named Player of the Series after producing several impressive performances against India’s highly regarded spin attack. The right-handed batter has also played four Tests in England, scoring 223 runs with two half-centuries, giving him valuable experience in local conditions heading into the final two matches.

BlackCaps look to recover after Lord’s setback

New Zealand now face a significant challenge as they attempt to recover from both their opening Test defeat and the retirement of one of the country’s greatest-ever cricketers. Williamson retired as New Zealand’s all-time leading Test run-scorer and leaves behind an enormous legacy that will be difficult to replace.

The BlackCaps will be hoping their experienced squad can respond positively in the remaining fixtures. The updated New Zealand squad for the remaining two Tests against England includes:

Tom Latham (c & wk), Devon Conway, Will Young, Henry Nicholls, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Tom Blundell, Nathan Smith, Zakary Foulkes, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, William O’Rourke, Blair Tickner, Dean Foxcroft.

The second Test at The Oval presents an opportunity for New Zealand to level the series and keep the contest alive before the final match at Trent Bridge. For Young, meanwhile, the call-up offers a chance to re-establish himself in the Test side and play a key role during a significant transitional period for New Zealand cricket.
