Linda Noskova outlasted compatriot Karolina Muchova as she recovered from squandering five match points to win the Wimbledon ladies singles final and claim her first grand slam title.

Ninth seed Noskova was playing in her first major final against fellow Czech Muchova, who entered the match with previous experience of losing at this stage, having come up short in the 2023 French Open final.

Yet Noskova displayed little in the way of nerves as she delivered a performance that belied her inexperience in major showpieces, claiming a 6-2 7-5 6-3 triumph.

Noskova eased to the first set and looked as if she would have the contest wrapped up in short order when she broke to move into a 5-2 lead in the second.

However, 10th seed Muchova displayed hugely impressive resistance to save match points in three successive games to force a decisive set.

But the 21-year-old broke early in the third and ensured there would be no repeat of her second-set profligacy, wrapping up the victory with a fierce serve down the middle to which her countrywoman could offer no response.

Noskova and Muchova shared a warm embrace at the end of an absorbing contest, with the former becoming the third Czech winner of the women’s singles in four years, following in the footsteps of Marketa Vondrousova (2023) and Barbora Krejcikova (2024).
