India’s T20I setup could be heading towards a major leadership transition as doubts continue to grow over skipper Suryakumar Yadav and his recent performances. While India managed to lift the T20 World Cup 2026 title under his captaincy, the star batter has struggled badly with the bat both during the global tournament and in IPL 2026, raising concerns within the selection committee.
Suryakumar has endured a difficult IPL campaign this season, scoring only 195 runs in 10 matches at an average of 19.52. His strike rate has also dipped below the standards expected from one of the world’s most destructive T20 batters. The underwhelming numbers have reportedly forced the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel to reassess India’s leadership plans in the shortest format.
According to a report in Dainek Jagran, the selectors are closely monitoring Suryakumar’s performances ahead of India’s upcoming T20I assignments against Ireland and England. While he may still continue as captain for those tours, another prolonged slump could significantly weaken his grip on the role. The management reportedly wants a captain who can lead consistently from the front, both tactically and with the bat.
CSK star becomes leading candidate for T20I captaincy of India
Amid the uncertainty surrounding Suryakumar, Sanju Samson has emerged as the strongest contender to become India’s next T20I captain. The Chennai Super Kings batter has enjoyed a sensational 2026 season and has impressed selectors with both his temperament and match-winning ability under pressure.
Samson played a defining role in India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign despite not being part of the playing XI initially. Once drafted into the side, he delivered crucial performances in high-pressure matches against the West Indies in the Super 8 stage, England in the semi-final, and New Zealand in the final. His calmness and ability to absorb pressure earned widespread praise and eventually helped him secure the Player of the Tournament award.
The wicketkeeper-batter has carried that momentum into IPL 2026 with remarkable consistency for Chennai Super Kings. Samson has already smashed two centuries and a half-century this season, scoring 402 runs in 10 matches at a stunning average above 57. His leadership credentials have also grown significantly, with reports suggesting he could even become Chennai’s captain next season if changes are made within the franchise setup.
Selectors are believed to value Samson’s experience within India’s current T20I core. Unlike several other contenders, he has remained an active member of the squad and has developed strong chemistry with the dressing room. If Suryakumar retains captaincy for the England and Ireland tours, Samson is expected to serve as vice-captain.
While Shreyas Iyer has also been discussed as a possible future T20I captain, reports suggest the selectors are not fully convinced about handing him the role immediately. The primary concern is his absence from India’s T20I setup over the last two years.
Shreyas has not represented India in T20 internationals since December 2023, which reportedly weakens his case despite his impressive captaincy record in franchise cricket. The right-handed batter has already led multiple IPL teams successfully and guided Kolkata Knight Riders to a title triumph. He is currently captaining Punjab Kings and continues to showcase his leadership abilities.
However, the selectors reportedly believe that Shreyas must first cement his place back in India’s T20I playing XI before being considered for the captaincy role. Even so, if Suryakumar’s struggles continue, Shreyas could still emerge as a strong middle-order option and a long-term leadership candidate in the future.
