OpenAI announced a deal with Broadcom to develop custom AI chips last year in order to power its next-gen computer cluster. It turns out that may only be the start, as OpenAI supposedly has big plans to break into the smartphone game.

TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo posted on X, claiming that OpenAI is going to “Redefine Smartphones” and mass production is to be expected by 2028.

“OpenAI is working with MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop smartphone processors, with Luxshare as the exclusive system co-design and manufacturing partner,” Kuo wrote. “Users are not trying to use a pile of apps. They are trying to get tasks done and fulfill needs through the phone. This fundamentally changes how people think about smartphones.” The analyst also said that specs and suppliers are expected to finalize by late 2026 or Q1 2027.

The benefit wouldn’t just be for OpenAI, as Luxshare, OpenAI’s manufacturing partner, gains a unique advantage in the assembly market. “No matter how hard Luxshare tries, it will be difficult for the company to surpass Hon Hai’s assembly position in Apple’s supply chain,” Kuo wrote. “With an early position in the supply chain, Luxshare could become a leading beneficiary in the next smartphone generation.”

How well this “next generation” will turn out is anyone’s guess, but seeing as many companies are pushing the envelope on AI, this move could be what pushes OpenAI ahead of the curve.
