In a significant decision that reflects a stricter approach toward player commitments, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has banned Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for two years.

Why PCB banned Blessing Muzarabani from PSL for 2 years?

The move comes after the pacer withdrew from the PSL despite having an existing contract, choosing instead to participate in IPL 2026 with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Muzarabani had initially signed with Islamabad United for the PSL season. However, he later pulled out of the agreement to join the IPL as a replacement player. This sudden shift did not sit well with the PCB, which considers such actions a breach of professional conduct.

After reviewing the matter, the board announced that the player would be barred from participating in the next two PSL editions. The decision signals a clear message from the PCB – that contractual obligations must be respected, regardless of competing opportunities in other leagues.

The PCB did not hold back in explaining the reasoning behind its decision. In an official statement, the board highlighted the importance of maintaining discipline and trust within franchise cricket.

“Professionalism in franchise-based leagues requires participants to act with transparency and consistency. Entering into a conflicting engagement while a prior binding agreement subsists represents a departure from the expected standards of the game. Such conduct, if left unaddressed, erodes the reliability of dealings and the confidence that franchises, regulators, and stakeholders place in professional engagements.”

The board’s stance reflects a growing concern among cricket boards about players prioritising one league over another after committing contracts. With multiple T20 leagues competing globally, such situations have become more common, forcing governing bodies to take firmer action.

Interestingly, this is not an isolated case. The PCB had previously taken similar action against South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch, who faced a ban after leaving the PSL to join the IPL as an injury replacement. That incident had already hinted at a tougher approach, and the latest decision reinforces that policy.

IPL opportunity vs PSL commitment: A growing dilemma

At the heart of the issue lies the increasing financial and professional pull of the IPL. For players around the world, the league offers unmatched exposure, higher salaries and the chance to compete at the highest level.

Muzarabani’s decision appears to have been influenced by these factors. While his PSL deal with Islamabad United was valued at approximately PKR 1.10 crore (around INR 36.44 lakh), the IPL opportunity presented a more lucrative and high-profile platform. He was brought into the KKR squad as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman, further boosting his career prospects.

Despite the PSL ban, Muzarabani’s current IPL stint remains unaffected. He has already made an impression in the tournament, including a standout four-wicket haul earlier in the season. KKR will continue to benefit from his services in IPL 2026.
