María Vázquez, Ana Santos and Bruna Cusí in Un dios que no baila
Filming began on 7 May on Un dios que no baila, a film that explores new forms of family, the influence of religion and the search for freedom through the lives of three women from different generations. The feature is written and directed by Pedro Díaz, and will be shot throughout May and June on location in Santiago de Compostela, Brion, Bastavaliños, A Baña, Coristanco, Ames and Negreira. The cast is led by María Vázquez (Goya nominee for Matria and Mataharis, recently seen in Band Together), Ana Santos (Eroski Paraíso) and Bruna Cusí (Goya winner for Summer 1993, appearing this year in Balandrau: Where the Fierce Wind Blew, among others).
Set in Galicia during the 1990s, the film follows María (played by María Vázquez), who wants to fulfil her mother’s final wish, expressed shortly before her death: that her daughter—that is, her granddaughter—should take her First Communion. A young nun (played by Bruna Cusí) crosses her path when she arrives temporarily at the village parish, surrounded by rumours about why she has been sent there.
The technical team includes Amanda Villavieja (Sirāt), Oscar-nominated for Best Sound, cinematographer Ion de Sosa (Goya nominee for Best New Director for Balearic), editor Juanma Gamazo, composer Beatriz López-Nogales and art director Melania Freire. The soundtrack will feature songs by the band Dover, marking the 30th anniversary of their album Devil Came To Me. Their music will play a central role in the story of these women, whose lives have been shaped by religion, death and rock music.
Pedro Díaz released his first short film, Mal de sangre, in 2014, followed by La entrega in 2022, which was nominated for a Goya Award. In 2023, he directed the documentary miniseries Historia de un encuentro, a journey through the last hundred years of Spain as seen through the history of the Telefónica company, featuring figures such as Marián Álvarez, Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, amongst others. He is now preparing to direct his first feature.
Un dios que no baila is a Spanish-Portuguese co-production by Pedro Díaz for Mandrágora Cinema, Pablo de la Chica and David Casas for Salon Indien Films, Daniel Froiz for Matriuska Producciones, Nu Boyana Portugal and Serenade Cinema AIE, in collaboration with RTVE and Movistar Plus+. The project also receives funding from the Institute of Cinematography and the Arts (ICAA), AGADIC and the Community of Madrid. Sideral will handle its distribution in Spain and its international sales.
