Since Curry Barker released his supernatural horror Obsession earlier this year, the film has assisted in pumping film discourse on social media platforms day in and day out, with debates on what its true messaging is, who was the “true villain”, whether it is truly worthy of the box office success and overall hype and much more.

Obsession stars Michael Johnston as a lovesick music store worker who wants nothing more than to have his feelings for co-worker Nikki, played by Inde Navarette, returned. Once he comes across a supernatural toy called a One Wish Willow, he finds his dreams have come true once Nikki seemingly falls madly in love with him. However, unnerving and sinister once it becomes clear that this may not be the real Nikki, but rather a morphed version created by the Willow, with Nikki displaying some horrifying and obsessive behaviour.

The film has grossed $488 million globally from a budget of $750,000, making it the seventh-highest-grossing horror movie ever made and the ninth-highest-grossing 2026 release so far.

Online debate about Obsession has seen a new log thrown on the fire, following the divisive and complex news that Nikki will feature as a character at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, an annual festival theme park attraction at Universal’s theme park where several leading icons from the horror genre don the park and interact with attendees.

As expected, the icons are filmed and posted online for entertainment content and views, essentially used as props for attendees’ socials with guests acting out surprise skits with them.

John Murdy, Halloween Horror Nights’ creative director and executive producer for Universal Studios, announced the news of Nikki’s attendance. “Nikki is out there somewhere, you need to get into a Where’s Waldo?-type mentality,” Murdy teased during MidsummerScream. “She might be looking for her next obsession, and I’ll leave it at that.”

The creative director has also shared exactly which image of the character will appear at the theme park, scouting through the various extreme presentations Nikki comes as throughout the film. “It’s a specific choice of which version of her we wanted to really focus on, and it’s the version at the very end of the film where she’s all bloody, she’s taken her friend’s dress, and she’s drawn the tattoos all over her body,” Murdy revealed to Inside Universal.

Discourse was kick-started when the news was shared online, with film fans taking to X to share their concerns and disapproval of having a woman whose brain and body are hijacked by evil forces against her will and being traumatised by the film’s ending as an amusement park character. Users have expressed deep concern for the character’s park actress and cautioned her involvement as representing a gross lack of critical media literacy towards film.

“I’m a lil scared that people who misunderstand the film will be very weird to her,” one reply cautioned.

Another reply shared that such a character being included in the theme park showcases a severe “misunderstanding of the film.” One quote post saw a user share, “Not to be the friend who’s too woke but I think we’ve genuinely lost the plot here.”

“I get it’s the biggest movie of the year, but commercializing a character that, in context of the film, a r*pe victim with no real autonomy, in your park, is so insanely tone deaf,” one thorough reading of the news stated. “It’s catering to the [people] who couldn’t read the film’s text for what it was. Really grossed out by this. Godspeed to the park actress having to play her.”

Additional commentary and debate sees Nikki becoming considered a horror pop culture icon in fun and casual discussion or replica given her story can be seen as an allegory for assault, drawing comparison with The Exorcist’s Regan going through the same given possible readings of her film, as well as Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger deemed a fun horror icon loved by fans given his dark backstory of child abuse and murder.

However, some users on the platform are proposing support and counterarguments, such as one horror account posting that “Nikki from Obsession is joining the long list of very iconic horror characters that are a victim…depriving her of horror icon status because of a technicality would be a shame,” alongside images of Regan, Jason Voorhees, The Bride of Frankenstein’s Monster and Carrie White.

“Nikki deserves her spot in horror culture just as much as male movie characters who were also victims,” another supporter wrote, also accusing those who disagree with the news of “turning a really good movie into something where nobody is allowed to enjoy” to achieve total understanding of Obsession’s film text.
