Manchester United edged past Liverpool in a breathless encounter at Old Trafford, surviving a fierce second-half fightback to secure a 3-2 win that earned them a spot in next season’s Champions League.
United imposed themselves from the opening whistle and were rewarded inside six minutes when Matheus Cunha reacted quickest to a loose ball on the edge of the area, driving a low effort through a crowd and beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
Their advantage was doubled before the quarter-hour mark. After Liverpool failed to deal with a transition, Benjamin Sesko forced an initial save but stayed alert to bundle the rebound over the line from close range.
Liverpool struggled to respond in any meaningful way before the interval. Despite enjoying spells of possession, they lacked any real penetration and were repeatedly exposed by United’s counter-attacking threat.
Cody Gakpo came closest with a curling effort that drifted narrowly wide, but the visitors went into the break two goals down and facing a steep uphill task.
Liverpool fight back but Mainoo has the final say
The complexion of the match shifted after the restart. Liverpool emerged with renewed intensity and halved the deficit almost immediately, Dominik Szoboszlai capitalising on a loose pass before driving forward and finishing.
Momentum was in Liverpool’s favour and their pressure told again just before the hour mark. A mistake in United’s build-up allowed Alexis Mac Allister to regain possession high up the pitch, and the ball quickly found its way to Gakpo, who converted from close range to level the score.
With the game suddenly wide open, both sides pushed for a decisive goal. Liverpool looked the more threatening for a spell, but United regained their composure and struck what proved to be the winner with just over ten minutes remaining.
A cross from the left was only partially cleared, and Mainoo reacted first on the edge of the area, unleashing a powerful first-time effort that flew past the goalkeeper and into the net.
Liverpool threw everything forward in the closing stages, introducing attacking reinforcements and forcing United deeper into their own half.
There were moments of danger, particularly from wide deliveries and set-pieces, but the hosts dealt well with the pressure to pick up a huge win.
