Peacock and A24 have unveiled the first teaser trailer for Crystal Lake, the slasher horror series by developer Brad Caleb Kane as a spin-off of the classic Friday the 13th film franchise. The prequel series is led by directors Logan George, Celine Held, Michael Lennox and Quyen Tran and stars Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Linda Cardellini, Danielle Kotch and Daniel Stewart Sherman
Crystal Lake’s premise centres on Pamela Voorhees, the mother of Jason Voorhees, who goes on to become the hockey-mask-wielding face of the film series in his hunt for teenagers’ blood. Pamela will go on to avenge her son’s drowning at the hands of neglectful camp counsellors, as depicted in the original 1980 film by director Sean S. Cunningham, which starred Betsy Palmer as the serial killer’s mother.
The show will anchor on Cardellini’s Pamela, who “has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake almost a year before.”
“When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events are set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees?”
The first Friday the 13th film grossed $59.8 million from an initial budget of just $550,000 to $650,000, competing with other classic horror releases such as The Shining and The Fog the same year, yet it hit initial critical panning due to a light step into exploitation film territory. However, it eventually received academic consideration for its depiction of teen sexuality and a female villain.
Nonetheless, Cunningham’s film went on to spawn one of horror’s most foundational and beloved franchises, consisting of nine sequels released between 1981 and 2002, as well as a spin-off crossover film with another ’80s classic horror, Nightmare on Elm Street, in 2003.
2009 saw a remake by director Marcus Nispel, which pushes the first and second films together to make Jason the central antagonist while still keeping Pamela’s killing spree. This film was an attempt to spawn a new timeline of the story, with a sequel planned, yet this was cancelled and is being moulded into a separate installment of the horror franchise.
Crystal Lake will be released via Peacock on 15th October.
