The future of Mumbai Indians (MI) star Suryakumar Yadav has become a major talking point in Indian cricket over the past few months. The star batter, who captained India to the T20 World Cup 2026 title earlier this year, has faced a challenging period since then. He was left out of India’s squads for the upcoming assignments against Ireland, England and the Asian Games, while his disappointing IPL 2026 campaign has further intensified discussions about his place in the T20 setup.

Speculation surrounding the star gathered momentum after he briefly unfollowed the franchise on Instagram before later re-following them. Although there has been no official indication that Suryakumar is considering a move away from Mumbai Indians, the incident fuelled widespread rumours among fans and experts regarding his long-term future in the IPL.

Robin Uthappa shares his prediction on Suryakumar Yadav

Former India batter Robin Uthappa recently weighed in on the discussion and made a bold prediction about Suryakumar’s future in the league. Speaking on the CommBoxTV YouTube channel, Uthappa suggested that the experienced batter could eventually find himself back at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the franchise where he enjoyed an important phase of his IPL career.

“From Surya’s point of view, he might go to KKR,” Uthappa said.

The suggestion comes at a time when Kolkata could be evaluating its options ahead of future seasons. Suryakumar previously represented KKR between 2014 and 2017 and established himself as a dependable middle-order batter during that period. His performances under the franchise’s leadership structure helped him emerge as one of the most consistent players in the squad before he later joined Mumbai Indians and developed into one of the world’s premier T20 batters.

Uthappa envisions an intriguing future scenario

Uthappa also outlined a longer-term possibility involving a familiar face associated with Kolkata Knight Riders. According to the former wicketkeeper-batter, there is a chance that Gautam Gambhir could return to the franchise in a coaching or mentoring role after completing his tenure as India’s head coach following the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“It rekindles the idea that once Gautam Gambhir finishes his stint with the Indian team, he probably goes back into KKR as a mentor or coach. And Surya fits into that as captain with Gambhir as the mentor again,” Uthappa added.

The duo share a strong history from their earlier days at KKR. Suryakumar played under Gambhir’s captaincy and was entrusted with leadership responsibilities during his time at the franchise, eventually serving as vice-captain. While Uthappa believes Suryakumar still has several years of franchise cricket ahead of him, he admitted that a return to India’s T20 side could be more challenging given the intense competition for places and the team’s transition towards a younger core.

For now, Suryakumar remains a Mumbai Indians player, and there is no indication that any move is imminent. However, Uthappa’s prediction has certainly sparked fresh discussion about what the future could hold for one of India’s most explosive white-ball batters.
