When the Indian cricket team walks out at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on June 13, 2026, all eyes will be on the veteran opening batter, Rohit Sharma. Returning to the side after being cleared by the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence medical team following a minor hamstring issue, the legendary opener is on the verge of rewriting history. As India takes on Afghanistan in the opening fixture of the three-match One Day International (ODI) series, Rohit will transcend the boundaries of a standard bilateral match, establishing a historic milestone that highlights both his longevity and enduring class at the highest level of international sport.

Rohit Sharma closing in on historic ODI record held by Mohinder Amarnath since 1989

By stepping onto the field against Afghanistan, Rohit will officially become the oldest Indian player to represent the country in ODI cricket. This milestone breaks a 37-year-old national record held by the legendary 1983 World Cup hero, Mohinder Amarnath. Amarnath set the benchmark back in October 1989 when he played his final ODI against the West Indies at the age of 39 years and 36 days. When Rohit takes guard in Dharamshala, he will be precisely 39 years and 44 days old, eclipsing Amarnath’s long-standing record by exactly eight days. While the absolute record for the oldest Indian to play international cricket across any format still safely belongs to the legendary Vinoo Mankad, who played a Test match at 41 years and 300 days, Rohit’s achievement marks a historic shift in modern white-ball cricket.

On a global scale, playing an ODI at nearly 40 is rare but not unprecedented. The absolute world record belongs to the Netherlands’ Nolan Clarke, who featured in the 1996 World Cup against South Africa at the extraordinary age of 47 years and 257 days. Nevertheless, within the high-pressure, intensely competitive ecosystem of Indian cricket, Rohit’s longevity is a remarkable testament to his elite physical fitness and structural adaptation to the game.

Rohit’s dismal form and the pursuit of the ICC number one ranking

What makes this milestone genuinely special is that Rohit is not just hanging on to his spot in the team; he is actively dominating opposition bowling attacks. His performances over the past year demonstrate that age has done nothing to slow down his run-scoring appetite. During India’s tour of Australia in October 2025, Rohit was named Player of the Series after amassing 202 runs in three matches, a run highlighted by a vintage 121 off 125 balls in the third ODI. He carried that rhythm into the home series against South Africa in December 2025, hitting a seamless 146 runs over the series with half-centuries of 57 and 75.

With star batter Virat Kohli missing the series due to a hamstring injury, the onus of the batting line-up rests heavily on Rohit’s shoulders. Beyond the age milestone, the three-match assignment against Afghanistan offers a massive statistical prize. Cricket analysts indicate that a heavy run-scoring series, specifically crossing the 280-run mark across the three matches, could propel Rohit back to the coveted number one spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, depending on how global competitors fare. As he maps out his journey toward the 2027 ODI World Cup, Dharamshala serves as the perfect backdrop for India’s ‘Hitman’ to claim his place as a timeless icon of the game.
