If you’re looking to buy one of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy foldable devices (including the rumoured new Ultra model), you’ll probably spend a bit more than before.
According to the Korean publication Bloter, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8 are expected to see hefty price increases in South Korea.
With this in mind, here are the new prices for the Z Flip and Z Fold:
- Z Fold 8 Ultra: 2,577,000 won (approx. C$2,392)
- Z Fold 8: 2,278,000 won (approx. C$2,114)
- Z Flip 8: 1,683,000 won (approx. C$1,562)
Now, with the Z Fold 8 Ultra positioned as the successor to the Z Fold 7, last year’s model came in at 2,379,000 won (approx. C$2,208), while the Flip 7 cost 1,485,000 won (approx. C$1,378).
However, you may have noticed that the prices for the South Korean market are significantly cheaper than in Canada. In fact, the Fold 7 in Canada starts at $2,499.99, and the Flip 7 starts at $1,462.99 — a near-$300 increase for the Fold 7 and a roughly $85 increase for the Flip 7.
Shifting back to the Z Fold 8 and Flip 8, it is roughly a 200,000 won increase for both returning models, which, at current conversion rates, comes to about C$185.69. Coupled with the already higher prices these devices have in Canada, we could see very high prices for the Fold 8 and Flip 8.
Although it seems ridiculous to pay $2,300-plus for a device, the increase is honestly not that much compared to previous models; however, paying the same price as rent or a mortgage on a place here in Toronto for a foldable phone is an eye-opener.
Now, according to Bloter, the main reason is rising component costs, such as the more recent rise in memory prices — the same reason we’re seeing price hikes from companies like Apple, Valve, Xbox and more.
