Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia has won the bronze medal at a Diamond League event in Shanghai, China. For Mitton, this was her 14th Diamond League medal of her career. She has now won two gold medals, seven silver medals, and five bronze medals.
Mitton had a throw of 20.42 metres. Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands won the gold medal with a throw of 21.09 metres. Chase Jackson of the United States won the silver medal with a throw of 20.46 metres. Mitton reached the podium comfortably by 1.16 metres over Fanny Roos of Sweden, who finished in fourth place with a throw of 19.26 metres.
Mitton’s career best throw is 20.68 metres. That took place in a Throws U event in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania on May 11, 2024.
This was the very first Diamond League event of the 2026 season in athletics. There are five Diamond League events in 2026 prior to the Diamond League Finals in Brussels, Belgium in September. The other four are in Stockholm, Sweden on June 7, in Oslo, Norway on June 10, in Paris, France on June 18, and in Eugene, Oregon, United States in early July.
Mitton’s most notable global result was winning the silver medal in women’s shot put at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Her bronze medal in Shanghai will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
