The Saskatchewan Roughriders have released American quarterback Jordan McCloud, who signed with the team in January.
The native of Tampa, Fla. finished his collegiate career at Texas State in 2024 where he completed 70.0 percent of his passes for 3,227 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He also rushed 74 times for 278 yards and seven scores to be named third-team All-Sun Belt with the Bobcats.
McCloud was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year in 2023 while playing at James Madison University. He completed 68.2 percent of his passes for 3,657 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions that season and rushed for 276 yards and eight scores.
The six-foot, 205-pound passer started his collegiate career at South Florida and Arizona. He threw for 2,770 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions with the former in 2019 and 2020, then 481 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions with the latter in 2021.
In total, McCloud completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 10,135 yards, 88 touchdowns, and 38 interceptions over 49 collegiate games. He also rushed for 986 yards and 20 scores.
Saskatchewan now has four quarterbacks on the roster: Trevor Harris, Jack Coan, Tommy Stevens, and Brayden Schager.
The Roughriders have also released American running back Darrell Henderson Jr., American receiver Ali Jennings III and Juwann Winfree, Canadian offensive lineman Dayton Black, American offensive lineman Yoesph Carter, American defensive lineman Thor Griffith, Global defensive lineman Sylvain Yondjouen, American linebacker linebacker Demouy Kennedy, American defensive back Nafees Lyon, and American kicker Michael Hughes.
Additionally, Saskatchewan moved American defensive back Jerry Jacobs to the retired list and Canadian running back Thomas Bertrand-Hudon to the active roster. The latter was previously on the injured veteran list.
All nine CFL teams were required to trim their rosters to 75 players (not including draft picks) by 11:59 p.m. local time on Tuesday, May 12.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders opened training camp on May 10. Saskatchewan will play its first preseason game against the Calgary Stampeders on Monday, May 18 and second preseason game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday, May 23. Final roster cuts are due on Saturday, May 30, after which the team will play its first regular-season game against the B.C. Lions on Saturday, June 13.
Saskatchewan recently selected Michigan State defensive back Malcolm Bell with their first-round pick in the 2026 CFL Draft, adding a key piece to pair with Tevaughn Campbell. The team’s other major offseason additions include defensive lineman James Vaughters and returner James Letcher Jr.
In 2025, the Roughriders finished first in the West Division standings with a 12-6 record. The team went on to defeat the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, marking the club’s first championship in 12 years.
