Rishabh Pant’s availability for the second day of the Colombo Test has emerged as a major talking point after the India wicketkeeper-batter was forced to retire hurt during the opening day against Sri Lanka. Pant was struck on his left arm by a sharp short delivery from Lahiru Kumara in the third session, leaving him visibly uncomfortable.

The incident occurred in the 58th over of India’s innings. Pant attempted to pull the rising delivery behind square but failed to make contact, with the ball hitting his left arm instead. He immediately showed signs of discomfort and received treatment from the Indian team physiotherapist.

An ice pack was initially applied before the affected area was taped. However, the tape was subsequently removed as Pant continued to struggle with the pain. After making three runs from 15 deliveries, the 27-year-old decided to walk off the field.

Pant’s early departure naturally raised concerns about whether he would be able to resume his innings on Day 2. India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, however, provided a positive update after stumps, suggesting that the wicketkeeper-batter is expected to be available if India need him.

“Rishabh Pant will be fine to bat tomorrow,” Kotak told reporters after the opening day.

The update will come as a relief to the Indian camp, particularly given Pant’s importance to the middle order. His ability to counterattack and change the momentum of a Test match makes him a valuable presence, especially with India still looking to build a sizeable first-innings total.

Ravindra Jadeja steps in as Devdutt Padikkal’s century lights up Day 1

With Pant unable to continue, Ravindra Jadeja walked out at No. 6 and joined Devdutt Padikkal in the middle. The pair helped India negotiate the late stages of the day as Padikkal continued to showcase his growing confidence in Test cricket. Padikkal brought up an impressive second Test century, combining patience with a fluent stroke-making display. His knock provided India with a crucial foundation after Sri Lanka had applied pressure during parts of the innings.

However, the hosts fought back strongly with the second new ball late in the day. India eventually finished the opening day on 300/5 after 85 overs, leaving the contest evenly poised.

For India, the biggest positive heading into Day 2 will be Pant’s expected return to the crease. If he is fit enough to resume his innings, his presence alongside Jadeja could give the visitors another opportunity to push the total beyond a competitive mark.
