Stay visible in the era of AI search

It used to be “I’ll Google it.” Now, many people just ask their LLM of choice.

They type their question, and they get their answer without ever visiting a website. In fact, more than 80% of searches now end without a click.

It is a fundamental change in how companies get discovered, and how a company navigates this change determines whether it’s visible or invisible.

THE END OF THE RANKING ERA

For years, the goal was to rank for the keyword. Get on page one. Beat your competitors. The strategy was simple, measurable, and effective.

That strategy no longer carries the same weight as more people get answers from AI Overviews and LLM responses without ever visiting a company’s website. The blue link that dominated marketing strategy for two decades is becoming less powerful.

Optimizing for search used to mean “rank for keywords.” Now it means “be part of the answer.” Those are fundamentally different objectives.

In a discussion with me about the future of search, one of our clients, Derek Janis, described it this way: “Discoverability used to mean ranking for “best [category solution]. Today it means being relevant in the context of the questions buyers are actually asking,” said Janis, who is chief marketing officer at AcquireUp, a technology-first seminar marketing company for financial professionals. “If we haven’t tailored our marketing and communications strategy to be part of that answer, we simply won’t exist in that buyer’s journey.”

    WHERE ANSWERS COME FROM

When AI synthesizes an answer, it relies on sources such as media coverage, customer reviews, blog posts, Reddit threads, and social media. The engine weighs what seems credible and surfaces what it trusts.

Credibility means trust from the right sources, not the most mentions.

LLMs and AI search engines do not simply rank your page higher because you used the right keywords. They draw from your website and the broader information landscape around you: media coverage, customer reviews, executive commentary on LinkedIn, and the story those sources tell together.

“You have to be telling the right story to be woven into AI-generated results in a way that actually resonates with your target audience,” Janis explained.

    VISIBILITY VERSUS CREDIBILITY

Visibility and credibility are not the same thing. You can be mentioned everywhere and still lack credibility. You can have media coverage, but if the narrative is scattered or contradictory, AI engines will struggle to make sense of what your company does.

Consider a fintech startup described in one publication as a disruptor, framed in another as risky, and discussed in a Reddit thread where customers complain about service. The AI engine sees all of this and must decide which story to pull. Usually, it chooses the most coherent one, backed by the most authoritative sources. But when the picture is unclear, confusion does not translate into recommendations.

Meanwhile, a competitor with less coverage but a consistent narrative across sources gets woven into AI answers more reliably. There is less conflict, less doubt, and a clearer story about what they do and who they help.

    Consistency wins.

REPUTATION IS NOW YOUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

Today, trust is the foundation of discoverability.

When you secure coverage from a respected outlet, you are not just getting a vanity mention. You are building credibility with the LLMs and AI search engines that people now turn to for answers. When you develop relationships with industry analysts, you are creating an opportunity for third-party validation these systems can draw from. When you cultivate customer stories and testimonials, you are shaping the narrative that may be pulled into the LLM or AI search engine answers.

This requires a fundamental shift in thinking. It is not “How do we get more mentions?” It is “What story do we want told about us, and which sources can help tell that story consistently?”

Instead of “Which keywords should we target?” it is “What questions are our buyers actually asking, and are we showing up as a credible answer to them?”

You are responsible for making sure the right story gets told. That requires keeping the narrative consistent, authentic, and relevant across every credible source where your brand appears. Leave it to chance and people and AI will fill in the gaps with their own assumptions.

    WHERE TO GO FROM HERE

Start with a clear point of view. What do you actually believe about your space? What do you do differently and why? What value do you create? If you cannot articulate it, no amount of press coverage will make it coherent to an AI engine or the people reading those answers.

Next, map your highest-priority audiences and identify the sources—journalists, analysts, industry platforms, customer communities—where they are listening and where credibility is built.

Get strategic about each source. Some relationships warrant deep investment. Some require maintenance. Some are not worth your time. The goal is not to be everywhere. It is to be present where it counts.

Then, measure the impact. Track where you show up in AI-generated answers. Monitor how your brand is described across sources. Look at whether the narrative is consistent. Most importantly, connect it to business outcomes: qualified traffic, search visibility, authority with the audiences that matter.

You are building more than brand awareness. You are building the infrastructure buyers use to discover you.
