Ted Cruz has shared a lot through his podcast series, including various people he has met. During a recent episode, Cruz revealed a surprising encounter with a Hollywood star during a sporting event. Notably, he isn’t the only one in his line of work who recently had kind words to say about the star.
Ted Cruz Shared A Surprising Encounter On Verdict with Ted Cruz
Cruz is a politician known for serving as the junior United States senator from Texas. Since 2025, he also chaired the Senate Commerce Committee.
Cruz also started a podcast, Verdict with Ted Cruz, in early 2020 with Michael J. Knowles. In 2022, the series partnered with iHeartRadio, with Ben Ferguson taking over for Knowles.
During a recent episode of his podcast, Cruz discussed an unexpected meeting when he watched a World Cup match. This was a chance encounter with actress and television personality Drew Barrymore. He met the star after watching the Spain versus Argentina game in New Jersey this past weekend.
Cruz admitted that he never met the star before, noting, “I’d never met her and look, she’s a terrific actress. But to be honest, Republican politicians are not necessarily all that popular among Hollywood actors.”

Despite this, however, Cruz had nothing but kind words for Drew. He continued, “She was the nicest person, and she was charming… We had a great conversation.” Adding that she was “real and fun,” he noted that she even gave him a hug.
Cruz recalled, “Every person she met, she’d go and hug them, so like she hugged me and I’m like, ‘Holy crap, Drew Barrymore is hugging me…’ and it wasn’t fake, it was just kind of a real…” Once again praising the Ever After star, he shared, “She’s an expressive, nice person and… we probably spent 20 minutes talking together, and it was really cool.”
Cruz even admitted that he had a soft spot for romantic comedies like those Barrymore starred in. Naming one in particular, he shared, “50 First Dates, it was a neat premise.”
Cruz isn’t the only conservative podcaster who has spoken fondly of Barrymore. Earlier this year, Megyn Kelly shared on her podcast, “She could not have been nicer. She was actually very cool. And we actually kind of talked about politics a little. I’m not going to repeat what she said because it was private, but she was quite reasonable. And I’ve developed a fondness for her. I’m not going to lie.” At the time, Kelly admitted that she previously made fun of the star, but meeting her changed her experience.
