Tekashi 6ix9ine dropped ‘Sex9ine’ on Thursday, and the tagline tells you everything before you even press play.
The rapper, born Daniel Hernandez in Brooklyn, put out the announcement on Instagram Thursday morning. The caption read: “Sex9ine out now. Make your next time the best time.” He also tagged @sex9ine__, a dedicated handle for the project. That’s a signal that a bigger rollout is in the works, not just a standalone single.
Subtlety has never been part of the Tekashi 6ix9ine playbook. Hernandez built his whole identity on going loud – bright rainbow hair, full-face tattoos, and beats cranked past the point of comfort. That formula worked spectacularly in 2018. “Gummo” caught fire with minimal industry push. “FEFE” with Nicki Minaj went multi-platinum. “Stoopid” with Bobby Shmurda had the streets locked in. For a solid stretch, he was one of the most-streamed rappers on the planet.
Then things got complicated. Federal racketeering charges in late 2018 led to prison time. His cooperation with federal prosecutors made him one of the most divisive figures in hip-hop, full stop. He walked out in early 2020 and came back swinging hard. “GOOBA” set YouTube debut records and clocked hundreds of millions of views. His 2020 album “TattleTales” moved units. But holding onto that momentum proved difficult, and the streaming numbers reflected it over time.
‘Sex9ine’ is the next swing. The name remixes his original handle with an unmistakable adult angle. “Make your next time the best time” is not leaving much open to interpretation. It’s loud and direct. It’s also completely on-brand for a rapper who leans into the provocative rather than away from it.
The Instagram announcement pulled just over 61,000 likes on release day. For a rapper who’s been operating outside hip-hop’s main orbit for a stretch, that’s a meaningful number on day one. It shows there’s still an audience paying close attention.
The @sex9ine__ handle tagged in the post hints at more to come. Whether that means videos, features, or a full project should become clear pretty soon. The groundwork is clearly there.
6ix9ine at his peak hit different for a lot of people. The hooks were sticky, the energy was chaotic in the best way, and the production had its own lane. ‘Sex9ine’ is him betting that crowd is still tuned in and ready for another round.
Whether the music backs up the branding is the question everyone’s answering right now. But 6ix9ine dropping something called ‘Sex9ine’ with that tagline and zero apology? That’s about as on-brand as it gets.
