The suspect accused of shooting at Secret Service agents near the National Mall on Monday has been identified as a Texas man in his 40s, according to reports.

Law enforcement officials said the assailant is 45-year-old Michael Marx, according to NBC News.

Authorities found a Texas driver’s license on the suspect after he suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and torso in the shootout near the corner of 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Southwest, on the southern side of the Washington Monument.

The suspect is expected to face several charges in connection with the shooting that also left a 15-year-old bystander with a bullet graze wound.

The suspect remains in the hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said plainclothes agents first noticed a “suspicious individual that appeared to have a firearm” walking around the perimeter of the White House complex at about 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Director Quinn said uniformed officers approached the suspect, who ran away and began shooting at the officers. Police returned fire and struck the gunman.

President Trump was hosting an event inside the White House when shots first rang out.

The incident led to a brief lockdown at the White House, but the Secret Service said the suspect did not attack Vice President J.D. Vance’s motorcade, which passed the location shortly before the shooting.

Authorities said the gunman’s intent is still under investigation.

“Whether or not it was directed to the president or not, I don’t know, but we will find out,” Director Quinn said.

The shooting came about a week after a gunman tried to rush into the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, which Mr. Trump was attending with several members of his Cabinet.

The suspect in that incident was thwarted by Secret Service. Prosecutors charged Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, with attempting to assassinate the president in the foiled attack.

Charging documents connect a manifesto to Mr. Allen that reads, “I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes.”
