The Price Is Right is set to premiere a big primetime special in a matter of months. Going all out, the special will do something for the first time in the show’s history. The CBS Entertainment president even teased a few surprises for the viewers at home.
The Price Is Right Has Been Running For Over Half A Century
The Price Is Right made its debut on CBS back in 1972, itself a revival of a 1956 show of the same name. It has since become one of the longest-running game shows in the United States.
Over the years, viewers have seen a lot of talent bring the show to life. For example, actor and comedian Drew Carey took over hosting duties for the show in 2007, taking over for Bob Barker.
According to the CBS Fall Primetime Schedule for 2026-2027, the show will debut a special right in time for the holiday season. It will also make a major format change for the first time in 54 years.
This will be a Christmas special in December. It will also be the show’s first live show in the show’s 54-year history.
According to The U.S. Sun, Paramount Plus has shared, “For the first time in its 54-year history on CBS, television’s longest-running game show will air live with THE PRICE IS RIGHT LIVE. This high-stakes, must‑watch primetime Christmas television event unfolds in real time, raising the pressure with every passing second.”
A Few Fan-Favorite Games Have Already Been Teased For The Big Special
“Viewers gain unprecedented behind-the-scenes access alongside host Drew Carey, announcer George Gray, the models and the production team as they race to keep the show on track, resetting games, transforming the stage and beating the clock. Lucky contestants will ‘Come on down!’ to play fan-favorite games Plinko, Cliffhangers and Lucky Seven, before spinning The Big Wheel for a shot at a luxury showcase – all played out live.”
According to the outlet, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach has also discussed the exciting move. She shared that producers came to the network with “a really fun pitch that we’ve seen that really justifies it.”
Reisenbach teased that the showrunners will really make use of the live experience to bring in viewers. She also felt that the holiday season would give the special a perfect atmosphere. As she continued, “I can’t imagine anything more fun for everyone to witness people winning prizes live.”
The special will serve as the first time the show will be aired live. However, back in 2003, fans saw the debut of a staged production show, “The Price Is Right Live!,” which allows audience members to participate in a simulation of the game.
