On The View, the co-hosts have weighed in on a number of “hot topics” over the years. However, the panel recently discussed another media outlet’s handling of political figures. This was TMZ, and the conversation actually went in an interesting direction.
Whoopi Goldberg Started The Conversation About TMZ On A Recent Episode Of The View
Viewers first saw The View make its debut back in 1997. Since then, fans have seen a number of co-hosts discuss various current events over the years.
Currently, the show’s co-hosts are made up of Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Ana Navarro. In fact, Griffin recently returned to the show after being on maternity leave.
During a recent episode of the long-running talk show, the co-hosts discussed another media outlet. This was TMZ and their decision to open a Washington, D.C. bureau and start giving Capitol Hill politicians the paparazzi treatment.
Opening the discussion, Whoopi Goldberg shared, “The clown show in politics keeps on expanding the tent. It was only a matter of time before this happened.”
“So, TMZ was tracking down Lindsey Graham like they do celebrities. Is this the right approach to media coverage of politics right now? Because I think better handled by some of the Real Housewives who were in DC recently for [an] HIV fundraising event, and they said there’s more drama in politics than there is on the Bronx right now.”
Griffin was a bit more sympathetic to the idea. As she noted, many members of Congress weren’t holding themselves to the high standards that politicians did in the past. She felt, “They’re not entitled to some of the decorum that they might be treated with by these people covering them.”
A Few Of The Co-Hosts Found Themselves Agreeing With Alyssa Farah Griffin
However, Griffin did feel that politicians should have more “scrutiny,” especially in comparison to “Kim Kardashian.” She also highlighted the scandals that various political figures have been facing in recent years.
As she continued, Griffin also spoke in the outlet’s defense. She shared, “I think TMZ is actually an outlet that often breaks stories first. They’re intrepid. They’re relentless. Our taxpayer-funded members of Congress should be covered that way.”

For her part, Behar admitted that she agreed with Griffin’s points, noting that TMZ would be asking the big questions. Looking at the current political climate, she shared, “So, I like it as a matter of fact, it’s true. What you say is right, too, that they don’t deserve to have the decorum that a journalism student from Columbia would use.”
Hostin also chimed in that Trump has “introduced” various “podcasters and influencers into the White House Correspondents Association.” Thanks to this, she admitted that she agreed with Griffin and Behar, calling things a “circus.”
Ultimately, when asked again about her thoughts on the matter, Goldberg shared, “If you’ve ever been chased down, you think, ‘Come on, man.’ But if, in fact, they’re public servants, put the sneakers on.”
