The White House is set to host a UFC fight on the South Lawn, which is meant to commemorate different events. In the days leading up to it, the event has been a topic of discussion on The View. Recently, one of the co-hosts in particular offered a suggestion for the proceedings, taking note of past White House events.
One Co-Host On The View Noted That Previous Presidents Have A History With Sporting Events
President Donald Trump is set to host a mixed martial arts event, “UFC Freedom 250,” on the White House’s South Lawn. This seven-bout fight card is set to take place on June 14.
The event is set to have a dual purpose. It will honor the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States’ anniversary. However, it also takes place on President Trump’s 80th birthday.
Since the fight’s announcement, it has been a topic of discussion on The View. Recently, the co-hosts discussed Trump taking a more direct role in the proceedings.
During this past Friday’s episode, Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sunny Hostin, and Ana Navarro appeared to agree that the event was too unusual for the White House to host. In particular, however, Griffin mused that Trump himself should get in the ring.
At Least One Co-Host Felt The Event Offered Something Of A Parallel To Congress
At the time, Griffin noted that past presidents do have a history with sporting events, adding, “Teddy Roosevelt takes the cake. He actually held a boxing match and participated. So, I’m for [the UFC fight], but Donald Trump has to get in the ring.”
For her part, Goldberg had a laugh about the suggestion, declaring, “I like that,” as she even started to clap. Later in the conversation, she mused that it didn’t quite feel like a sports event and more of a suggestion of who the American people were “supposed” to be.
Haines, meanwhile, thought it was a funny illustration of the state of Congress. She expressed, “It’s fitting that they’re making it an official cage match. That’s how I feel every time we talk about D.C. There’s a jersey and you’re on this side or this side and … go.”
That said, Hostin felt that the fight didn’t “reflect American culture.” Taking note of Trump’s own stock in UFC, she also expressed concern that this was “a for-profit event on government grounds.” Navarro also criticized the event, feeling that the president’s birthday really should be more of a private event.
