Sports and politics are often topics on The View, especially when they go hand-in-hand. Recently, the co-hosts discussed an upcoming invitation to the White House. During the conversation, Whoopi Goldberg shared how she thinks things should play out, as the co-hosts weighed in on the story.
The New York Knicks Have Been An Ongoing Topic Of Discussion On The View
During recent episodes of The View, the New York Knicks have become a recurring topic of discussion. This has been the case throughout the NBA championship, leading up to their eventual win.
During this past Thursday’s episode, the co-hosts discussed the team’s owner, James Dolan. In particular, they weighed in on his accepting an invitation to visit his “friend,” President Donald Trump, at the White House.
This would also spur a decision on the team: whether or not they would be going along with him. During the conversation, Whoopi Goldberg felt that they should go along with Dolan, feeling that it would make a powerful statement in light of the censorship of history.
Goldberg expressed, “I want them to go. I want all those Black men to stand in our house and remind all of those people, as we tried to remind the vice president, that when you try to destroy one part of history, you’re destroying all of our histories.”
The Co-Hosts Also Expressed Concern For Players Who Didn’t Want To Attend
“And they, as champions, not only as amazing basketball players, but as people who were down and came back up, [can say], ‘This is what this looks like. Yeah, this is what this looks like.’ So I want them to go, I want them to go. If only so the kids know that nobody, nobody can keep you down.”
The other co-hosts shared different opinions. Sunny Hostin was against the players attending, as she was concerned that the event would be “politicized.”
Meanwhile, Alyssa Farah Griffin felt that the players should go if they chose to. However, she expressed concern that players who refused to go would face retribution. Sara Haines expressed similar sentiments, adding, “I just think it’s not fair to take any of the flowers and the beauty of this moment and its unity and try to then place it on the players’ backs.”
As the conversation concluded, Goldberg felt that the moment should be more than just politics or Trump. She shared, “For me, for this moment, it must be about more than him.”
