Viewers of Today recently saw Vicky Nguyen make a joke alongside co-star Carson Daly. However, inside sources claim that the comment might have sparked more discourse than it seemed. In fact, Nguyen also addressed criticism she’s faced over the joke on social media.
Carson Daly & Vicky Nguyen Discussed A Summer Activity During A Recent Episode Of Today
Daly first became known to many for his work on MTV’s Total Request Live. However, he is currently known to many for his work with Today, having joined NBC in 2002. He joined the morning show in 2013 as a social media correspondent, with his role increasing over the subsequent years.
For her part, Nguyen joined NBC News in 2019 as the Investigative and Consumer correspondent. In addition to Today, she had also appeared on NBC News Now and MSNBC.
A conversation unfolded during the July 17 episode of Today, which saw the hosts discuss outdoor grills. Daly felt that expensive barbecues were not always the best option.
For her part, Nguyen jumped in with a smile and hugged Daly. She then joked, “Yeah. Thank you for mansplaining that again, Carson.” The unexpected comment caused Al Roker to quip, “You come for the grill advice, you stay for the ba-boom!”
Daly appeared to laugh off the comment. He then teased, “I just am passionate about the grill!”
Following this, however, an insider discussed the segment on Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack. According to the source, things were less cordial at the studio once the segment wrapped up.
The insider claimed, “Carson exploded off-air as soon as they went to commercial. He’s still livid, and Carson can hold a grudge.”
Nguyen Herself Addressed Criticism Over Her Comment On Instagram
Another source claimed that the joke brought about a discussion of workplace culture on the morning show. They claimed, “When something like this happens on camera, people naturally wonder what the atmosphere is like when the cameras are off. These moments don’t happen in a vacuum.”
That said, one source claimed that Nguyen’s comments could have struck a chord with some staff members, as they allegedly could see where she was coming from. They shared, “Her response resonated with the staff because they recognized the dynamic immediately. Carson would never speak to a man that way — or to Savannah Guthrie. It’s always the younger female staffers who get interrupted.”
For her part, Nguyen addressed the criticism in a post on Instagram. She shared a comment from a viewer, “You owe Mr. Daly an apology for your ‘mansplaining’ comment.”
Nguyen captioned the post, “It’s hard out here for a consumer reporter,” taking things with a sense of humor. For the time being, however, neither Nguyen nor Daly discussed the claims of any backstage drama publicly.
