The Today Show became headline news after a shocking incident happened on July 16. A man breached the studio and confronted one of the show’s anchors. The man was allegedly looking for Al Roker but found Craig Melvin instead. Luckily, the man was apprehended before anything happened. However, a security guard has reportedly been fired after the terrifying incident. Keep reading for more details.
Crazed Man Confronts Craig Melvin
Craig Melvin took over for Hoda Kotb as Savannah Guthrie’s co-anchor on the Today Show’s first two hours in 2025. He also co-hosts the third hour with Dylan Dreyer and Al Roker. Moments before the 9 a.m. broadcast began on Thursday, July 16, a man breached security and confronted Craig Melvin. The man, later identified as Andrew Truelove, 41, allegedly used a racial slur before he was apprehended.
The would-be assailant is now facing a litany of hate crimes after the scary confrontation. No one was injured during the incident, but it brings up the question of where was the security? Especially after what’s going on with Savannah Guthrie.
Today Security Guard Fired Over Incident
Savannah Guthrie was absent from the Today Show for two months earlier this year. She left the show in February amid a family emergency. Her elderly mother was declared missing. The police believe Nancy Guthrie, 84, was kidnapped from her home. She still hasn’t been found. NBC reportedly increased security at the show’s studio at New York City’s Rockefeller Center at the time.

However, a man was able not only to get into the studio but also to approach Craig Melvin “NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios,” NBC said in a statement after Thursday’s incident.
Page Six is now reporting that at least one security guard has been fired following the incident. The outlet reported that a video of the incident showed two security guards on duty in the area at the time. One guard reportedly stepped away. The other one somehow didn’t see the intruder slip past. It’s unclear which one was fired.
Craig Melvin took to social media after the incident to assure fans he’s okay. “Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I’m doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out,” he wrote. He returned to the Today Show on Friday, one day after the shocking confrontation.
The details of the incident are still coming out. Stay tuned for updates.
